Crazy city

I’m now in Regensburg, in what has turned out to be a bit of a crazy city. Lots of students, lots of stuff happening. Feeling a bit slow today, after a rather late night out last night.

Ended up at a place that seemed to be like something like what a 1980’s student bar might have been like. Rammstein, AC/DC, G’n’R playing, people wearing Metallica shirts, that sort of thing. People were falling over drunk, but all security would do is prop them up, rather than throwing them out. I saw one guy fall over at least 4 times, all seen by the bouncer, who let him stay. Oh and did I mention that you have to push a buzzer to get let in the door? Not sure why, but it was a good night out.Just as well I’m having a rest day though, as I didn’t get back to my hostel until 5am. Good thing it’s an independent hostel, and they don’t kick you out at 10am.

Have been getting my guidebooks sorted out for the next couple of legs of the Danube bike path. Only about 600km from Passau to Budapest. There is now a book available for the last part of the Danube, Budapest to the Black Sea. I will branch off the Danube before then, and aim for a more direct route to Istanbul.

Here’s a photo I took at my lunch stop the other day:

Already looking much rougher than when I started.

You didnt tell your mother and father that you intended visiting every bar you possibly could when you started this journey!Good to hear you are enjoying yourself, Lew

Clicked on your photo. You look like a German biker wearing a set of leathers and all very serious. Do chicks like that? Dave

I am actually carrying a couple of razors, but just the cartridge part, not the handle. Not really sure why, as I don’t plan on shaving until Turkey, and if I do shave there, I’ll get a barber to do it.

Woke up with frost on my tent this morning, was a little bit cool, but my sleeping bag is warm enough.

Thought the bearded look could be off-putting, but European women are more accustomed to bearded men, I guess.

Hi there,

I’m Tony and I’m not sure whether your brother Jackson has mentioned my name or not but we worked together (here in Wellington). I’m from Austria. Very cool report! I’m reading you’re heading down the Danube so you’ll cross Austria very soon. If you’re interested in things to see or do or want any other help/tip/suggestions feel free to send me an email [email protected].

I myself own 3 bikes and I bike-(tour) quite a bit myself (in Sept biked bigger area fo Blue Mountains (Oz), this Christmas the South Island, multibple times to New Plymouth and Gisborne). I know bikes very well. So feel free to get in touch with me if something breaks down on your bike as it’s very likely I might have seen and experienced the fun myself đŸ˜‰

I’ll come and visit Germany ,Austria, Check Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Ukraine and then Polen myself when I come over mid May. You might be well and truly past these countries but if not I would be keen to invite you for a good bikers feast – ALL YOU CAN EAT!

Till then, take care and all the very best on your trip.

Tony

I was thinking the beard was there because you get to your hostels too late to shave and leave to early. Saving money on shaving cream to spend on booze?

Tony, I’m now in Wien, so almost out of Austria – going to stop here for a couple of days, then head to Bratislava on Sunday.

Notes on good bike stores in Wien would be appreciated, I need to replace 3(!) of my gear cables, where the outer plastic has cracked.

Presumably by May I’ll be in Iran, although that is up in the air, as, in their infinite wisdom, they have shut down for a month, further extending their already torturous visa process. Looks like it will be much stuffing around there, possibly involving bus trips back from eastern Turkey to Ankara. Bastards. Will go via Georgia/Azerbaijan if I have to.

I’m out on the bike for up to 8 hours a day, but that still leaves plenty of time for showering/shaving, etc – the beard is more because I can. I must be saving at least €1 per week on razors and soap too! Wow! I can buy one small beer during happy hour at the hostel with that….
